Dr. Sunil Shrestha is a senior Professor of General Surgery and the Head of the Department of Surgery at Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu. With over two decades of experience in clinical surgery, teaching, and academic leadership, he is widely respected for his contribution to surgical care and medical education in Nepal.

Dr. Shrestha completed his MBBS from Chittagong Medical College, Bangladesh, and earned his Master of Surgery (MS) in General Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), India. He has been associated with Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital for many years, serving in multiple key leadership roles including Professor, Head of Department, MBBS Coordinator, Postgraduate Preceptor, and Member of the Institutional Review Committee. He currently also serves as the Chairman of the Postgraduate Subject Committee at Kathmandu University School of Medicine and Deputy Chief Editor of the Nepal Medical College Journal (NMCJ).

Clinically, Dr. Shrestha has extensive experience in general and gastrointestinal surgery, including laparoscopic and open procedures. His areas of expertise include laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy, colorectal surgery, hernia repair, thyroid and breast surgery, splenectomy, gastrectomy, intestinal resections, hemorrhoidectomy, and advanced endoscopic procedures such as upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. He is actively involved in emergency surgical care and regularly conducts outreach surgical camps in rural communities.

Dr. Shrestha has made significant contributions to medical research, with numerous publications in national and international journals, including The Lancet, JAMA Surgery, World Journal of Surgery, and the International Journal of Surgery. His research interests focus on gastrointestinal surgery, surgical epidemiology, access to surgical care, and outcomes research in low-resource settings.

Committed to lifelong learning, Dr. Shrestha has participated in and presented at multiple national and international conferences and has undergone advanced training in laparoscopic surgery, endoscopy, trauma care, and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
